What Time Will The World End On December 21, 2012?

I know, it’s a morbid question to ask or even ponder, but there are people who need to
know, and need to know as soon as possible.

So what’s the question? People all across the world are wanting to know what time will the world end on December 21, 2012? And even more so why is the world ending?

Before I break down this year’s 2012 winter solstice event and relating that to your local time zone so many of you can prepare for a possible  upcoming apocalypse I need to present some background information on what the heck is going to happen and at what time it might happen on December 21,2012.

The ancient Mayans were intelligent people who were into cycles, astronomy and mathematics. They created several components to a calendar, one was called the Great Cycle long count and lasts 5,126 years.

The countdown started in 3114 BC. So after doing some simple math: 5,126 minus 3,114, you end up with 2012. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year and falls on December 21, 2012. So that day ends the Great Cycle calendar. There are no more days left or years for that matter. The calendar just ends. But does it?

Many people have pointed out the Mayans thought in cyclical terms and constructed their calendar similar to a wheel. Many believe then that the cycle naturally repeats itself after the end is reached. But this is still being debated. But what about this end of the world or Doomsday talk?

Well, this is where the facts end and the speculation begins. The Mayans never mentioned any Doomsday prophecy at the end of this Great Cycle as far as scholars are concerned. Many say the Mayans just simply believed that 5,000 plus years was enough days for a long calendar cycle of time and existence on Earth. Others speculate that the Mayans believed the cycle would repeat itself while still others interpreted this as a spiritual renewal period or rebirth.

For the Doomsday believers the end of the world is a natural consequence and result of the Mayan’s calendar ending on December 21, 2012.

For these people the manner in which the world will end is still a mystery. Some of the more popular theories out there have the world ending in several ways: a  natural dramatic shift of the Earth’s poles, an enormous asteroid impact, a massive earthquake upheaval, or by several super volcanic eruptions. Some say an all out nuclear war on this day will be the end of days as we know it.

Less popular predictions include a possible catastrophic  global cyber attack. And an even less popular prediction sees a more metaphorical or symbolic ending to the world which would embody a shift in human consciousness.

Perhaps there could even be a delayed ending to the world such as a deadly virus that will begin spreading on this day or even the birth of the Antichrist. In these scenarios the Earth will meet its demise in later years, but will be traced back to the December 21, 2012 date and time when the seeds of destruction were planted

I’m sure most common sense people will agree nothing cataclysmic will happen on December 21, 2012 and the day will progress as it usually does in an uneventful and predictable manner.

Now back to what we know about what time will the world end on December 21, 2012. If we are to believe the world might end on December 21, 2012 then we need to find out when the official winter solstice begins. This is the exact time when the Earth’s tilt is farthest away from the sun.

The U.S. Naval Observatory has the winter solstice time set to officially begin at 11:11 38 sec. GMT UT (Universal Time) and hence have rounded it to 11:12 UT. So there you have it. The world is suppose to end at 11:12 Universal Time (UT) for the die hard true believers out there. But how does that translate into conventional time zone in your area?

Basically, the exact beginning of the winter solstice begins at the exact same time for everyone around the world. However, UT time is converted into different times depending on where you live and in what time zone.

For example, in the United States, the 11:12 GMT UT time converts into 6:12 a.m. ET. If you live in the United States here is a breakdown of the different time zones that the world might end on December 21, 2012:

  • 6:12 a.m. EST (Eastern Time)
  • 5:12 a.m. CST
  • 4:12 a.m. MST
  • 3:12 a.m. PST
  • 2:12 a.m. Alaskan Time

If you live in another part of the world you can use this time conversion website to convert between time zones starting with the UT time of 11:12 which officially marks the beginning of the winter solstice in 2012.
