When Do I Have To Get Or Update To The New Facebook Timeline?

You might have been asking yourself and others this question over the past couple of weeks. In fact maybe since Facebook first announced the new Timeline interface back in the fall of 2011. If you’ve been following the latest official news and posts from Facebook the answer to this question is now quite clear.

Facebook announced earlier this week that they are speeding up the transition for users to switch from the old profile page to the new Timeline page. In fact Facebook has recently stated on their blog post “Timeline: Now Available Worldwide” that:

Over the next few weeks, everyone will get timeline.

Facebook will be making Timeline mandatory for all Facebook users over the next few weeks. Once switched over you will have 7 days to clean up your Timeline to get it ready for full viewing. You will be warned of an “updated” status on top of your profile page if you haven’t already made the switch to Timeline.

So what does this updated status on your Facebook profile page mean? Basically, it’s Facebook’s way of telling you to go ahead and activate your Timeline now. Once activated you can log into your Timeline and update your posts by adding, deleting and hiding posts and photos on your time slider. You will have 7 days to do this before your Timeline becomes permanently available to everyone.

So what if you delay the switch over or refuse to switch at all? Do I have to get Facebook’s Timeline you might be asking? It looks like Facebook emphatically answered this question when they stated earlier, “everyone will get timeline“. When is the final day you can switch over to Facebook Timeline? They are giving everyone a couple of weeks to switch in order to make the transition as smooth as possible. After that they will automatically update the remaining reluctant or oblivious users for them. A definitive time table has not been given. Looks like you’ll have Timeline whether you like it or not. Facebook will also be doing away with the old profile page format as it now will become obsolete.

It’s important to also note that the news feed will remain the same for now.

So what’s the big deal about Timeline anyway. Many of us have already heard that Timeline was going to be a better way to narrate your life events with prioritized posts and photos. And many of us are aware of the large Facebook Cover picture that will take up a nice bit of real estate at the top of the page. But what will make Timeline so different than its predecessor is the integration of the new Timeline apps that will allow you to post and share content in real time space.

Facebook has announced a slew of apps that can be integrated with Timeline including Ticketmaster, Rotten Tomatoes, Foodspotting, Pinterest, Kobo and Tripadvisor to name some of the featured ones.
